Guidelines
Guidelines on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
Date of publication: March 2005
PGD is a procedure used in conjunction with in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to test early human embryos for serious inherited genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities before they are transferred to a woman's uterus.
The procedure is sought by both fertile and infertile couples at high risk of having children with a serious genetic condition. Applications for PGD for Human Leucocyte Antigen tissue typing must be submitted to ECART for ethical approval on a case-by-case basis. All other applications of PGD outlined in the Guidelines are established procedures and therefore do not need ethical approval on a case-by-case basis.
